So I found myself buying a MacBook Pro from them instead of the nearby and possibly more convenient Apple Store.The salesperson seemed quite nice, and after the typical upsell of additional items, we walked out of the store with a computer and two rebate forms.
One was for $10 and was a hassle to complete online, so I threw it away. The second was for a $60 rebate for having purchased a MBP and Parallels together. The hassle factor was high: despite a receipt with the serial numbers and date and all other pertinent info, I still had to copy the boxes and serials of the software & computer.
I sent it in to MacMall within a week, and about two weeks later, instead of receiving a check, I received a letter informing me that my rebate request could not be honored, because "it did not match any rebate promotions in our system that you would qualify for."
Huh?!?
I called the 888-number given in the rejection letter, and after hearing the same recorded voice tell me how "very important your call is to us" over and over again, I was pretty fired up. It took a live person 25 minutes at the "Rebate Department" to pick up the phone.
Turns out, they sent a letter in error to everyone about denying the rebate - could this be a ploy to keep from sending a check until someone actually calls to complain? My guess is that 50% of the letter recipients would not call, and another 30% would hang up on "Customer Service" after being on hold for twenty+ minutes, so they've dropped the actually amount of rebates they must pay to 20% or even less.
Goes to show you - I normally don't waste my time on these things, but if I could complete the form and make the copies in 15 minutes, I was getting paid $240/hour, for one of the few times in my life. Looks like it was too good to be true.
